The vestibules on the flying Yankee have unique dropping stairs that allow ground level access to the train. They have been completely restored with new trap doors and new mechanical linkages. The original stair treads were reinforced and repaired. Grab irons have been reinforced beyond the factory design. The four vestibule doors and all door frames have had all their corroded metal removed and replaced with stainless steel. Installation of the restored doors has been deferred until all the seating and large equipment has been placed on board.
