The restoration work on the trucks is nearly complete and they should be delivered to Lincoln within the next few weeks. If you click here to see a larger version of the photo on the right, you'll see a hole. Now, the newly painted Flying Yankee panels are installed and look beautiful.

Come see the progress on the Flying Yankee

The restoration of The Flying Yankee continues and the big news is the completion of the restoration work on the trucks. One last item remains to be corrected after the inspection of the work and the trucks should be arriving back in Lincoln within a month.

Crates have been built to protect the trucks while restoration continues on the rest of the train. At least one of the crates will be open during the summer Open Houses and you’ll be able to see them when you come to visit.

An inspection of the GE 721 Traction Motors was recently performed. One of the Traction Motors is complete and ready to go and the other needs only minor work to make it operational. The Traction Motors should provide at least ten years worth of dependable performance.

Panels with “The Flying Yankee” beautifully painted by Pillsbury Sign Company of Hopkinton Massachusetts were recently placed back on the train, on each side of the Observation Car. What a beautiful job done by Pillsbury Sign Company and we thank them for their contribution to the restoration. They are now working on the large panels, restoring them to their original glory with the Boston and Maine and Maine Central Railroad signage that originally graced The Flying Yankee. Thanks again to Don Pillsbury.

A clean-up day was held recently and The Flying Yankee is looking great and we hope to see as many people as possible this summer.

Don’t forget, you can still see the Third Annual Flying Yankee Gala Photo Gallery by clicking here.

Flying Yankee Open Houses Set for 2008

Four Flying Yankee Open House events this season on Saturday, June 7, Saturday, July 5, Saturday August 2 and Saturday September 27 from 10:00am until 4:00pm at the Hobo Railroad located on Rt. 112 in Lincoln, NH.

All four of the Open House events this summer will take place rain or shine and will feature guided tours of the Flying Yankee’s three cars every 30 minutes starting at 10:00am, with the last tour of the day taking place at 3:30pm. The guided tours will provide an up-close view of the historic Art Deco-era streamliner while it’s in the midst of being completely restored to operating condition. The newly restored trucks will also be available for viewing.

Now based at the Hobo Railroad in Lincoln, NH where Phase II of the restoration is underway, the Flying Yankee will be the one and only train of this type to ever operate again once the restoration is complete. Once operational, the train will serve as a rolling icon for Education, Economic Development and Tourism for the State of New Hampshire. Restoration of the Flying Yankee started in November 1997 and entered Phase II in August 2005 - it’s now more than 50% complete with a planned completion date of late 2010 – depending on funding. For more information regarding the restoration of the Flying Yankee or the series of four Open House events with guided tours, please call (603) 745-FYRG [3974] or visit the Flying Yankee’s official web site at www.flyingyankee.com.
