New N.H. DOT Commissioner Tours The Flying Yankee
George N. Campbell Jr., the new Commssioner of the New Hampshire Department of Transportation, recently visited Lincoln and took a tour of The Flying Yankee. Campbell was accompanied by his intern, Amadin Osagiete and Jack Ferns of the Bureau of Rail and Transit. The State of New Hampshire owns The Flying Yankee and is working in partnership with the Flying Yankee Restoration Group, Inc., toward its historic restoration. Campbell was impressed with the work done to date and has expressed his support for the project. While at the Hobo Railroad, Campbell also was given a tour of the workshop as well as the restored Pullman "Suitsme" car. Ben Clark of the Hobo Railroad was a gracious and expert host for the tour. Campbell also got to see the recently restored truck wheel assemblies, which had just been returned to Lincoln a couple of days prior to his tour. It was great to be able to host the commissioner and we are grateful for his support. Now, we are anxious to get on with the restoration, with the next item on the agenda, the restoration of the GE 721 Traction Motors. Following that, we hope to get the information together necessary to proceed with the power plant. Your generous support is still very much needed and always appreciated.
Third Open House of 2008 Scheduled for August 2
The third of four Flying Yankee Open Houses for 2008 will be held at the Hobo Railroad in >Lincoln, NH on Saturday, Aug. 2 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. (final tour is at 3:30 p.m.). The event will take place rain or shine and will feature ongoing guided tours of the Flying Yankee inside and out permitting folks of all ages to get an up-close view of this historic streamliner. Although reservations are not required for the guided tours and there will be no entry fee to enjoy the Flying Yankee Open House event, tax-deductible donations for the ongoing restoration project will be greatly appreciated. And, of course, you can get your seat raffle tickets as well. This is also an opportunity to view the rebuilt truck wheel assemblies, which will be out on display for this Open House. The completion of the trucks represents a major milestone in the Flying Yankee restoration project.
Come and stay for the weekend. The Lincoln-Woodstock area has dozens of lodging options, including the Comfort Inn and Suites, tons of dining options, including the Café Lafayette Dinner Train and several of New Hampshire’s favorite attractions, including The Hobo Railroad. To get all the details and to find a list of weekend activities in the region, visit www.lincolnwoodstock.com.
Operated jointly by the Boston and Maine Railroad and the Maine Central Railroad throughout northern New England from 1935 to 1957, the Flying Yankee was the second of only four diesel-electric, 3-car streamliner passenger trains of this type ever manufactured by the E.G. Budd Company of Philadelphia, PA. It traveled nearly 3 million miles from its home base at Boston’s North Station. The Flying Yankee was purchased from the Edaville Railroad in Carver, MA in the early 1990s by the late Robert S. Morrell, creator of Story Land and Heritage NH in Glen, NH and donated to the State of New Hampshire in 1995 for the sum of one dollar.
Now based at the Hobo Railroad in Lincoln, NH where restoration work will be completed, the Flying Yankee will be the only train of its type to ever operate again – anywhere in the world – once the restoration is completed. The Flying Yankee will also serve as an icon for Education, Economic Development and Tourism for the State of NH when the restoration is complete. The restoration is over 50% complete at this time. A $3.5 million dollar Capital Campaign to raise the funds necessary to complete the Flying Yankee’s restoration and testing is underway and a Naming Rights Program is a central part of the fund raising effort. Attend the Open House to learn how you can own your own seat on The Flying Yankee forever and ride free each and every year.
To learn more about the Flying Yankee Open House scheduled for Saturday, Aug. 2 or how you can help support the project though a tax-deductible donation, contact Flying Yankee officials by calling (603) 745-3974, visit the Flying Yankee’s official web site www.flyingyankee.com or send an e-mail to flyingyankee@usa.net. The final 2008 Open House will be Sept. 27.
Welcome National Assocation of S Gaugers
The Bristol S Gauge Railroaders are hosting the 2008 National Convention of the national Association of S Gaugers (NASG) in Lowell, MA, Aug. 5--10 in recognition of their 60th Anniversary as the "Oldest S Gauge Club in the Americas". The Bristol S Gauge Club has been a strong supporter of The Flying Yankee restoration project and we are very pleased to welcome them to Lincoln on Friday, Aug. 7 when they will host bus loads of their convention attendees on a trip to view The Flying Yankee. Everyone connected with the Flying Yankee Group is pleased to be able to welcome this outstanding group to Lincoln and wish them well with their National Convention. And, note the convention logo below. Just another example of the wonderful support shown by the S Gaugers!
Fourth Annual Flying Yankee Celebration Date and Location Set
The Fourth Annual Flying Yankee Celebration (Note the Name Change) will be held on Friday night, April 3 (Note the Day Change) at the Executive Court Banquet Facility at the Best Western Executive Court Inn on S. Mammoth Road (Rte. 28) in Manchester, NH (Note the Location Change). We hope the Friday night will be convenient for most of our attendees who will now have the rest of the entire weekend to enjoy with their families or doing whatever it is they wish to do on the weekend. We hope the location will be more centralized as we know many of our supporters travel from Massachusetts and, being early April, the Friday traffic shouldn't be too awful. You'll also note the slight name change from Gala to Celebration. We want it to be less formal and just a night of casual fun for all of the Flying Yankee supporters and would-be supporters who attend. It's a casual night of food, fun and meeting old and new friends. We will have more details soon including special room rates at the new Best Western located right next door, menu selections and entertainment for the evening. We hope to maybe even provide some time to get your significant other on the dance floor. We have an awful lot of things happening here at The Flying Yankee and we hope this celebration will be the best one yet and that we'll have a whole lot to celebrate. We know we will be able to celebrate the generous support of all of our "Friends of the Flying Yankee."

Hobo Railroad to Host Seuss Adventure Trains
The Cat in the Hat will soon be making tracks to the Hobo Railroad, in Lincoln, NH, as part of a weekend of special train excursions operated in conjunction with the Believe in Books Literacy Foundation. The “Seuss Adventure” trains will depart from the Hobo Jct. Railroad Station on August 9th and 10th at 11:00, 1:00 and 3:00 PM. Guests will be treated to a Suesstastic adventure aboard the train’s family fun car featuring games, stories, crafts and a visit from the Cat in the Hat himself!
“The Seuss Adventure is an exciting way for us to promote our literacy based outreach programs” explains Heather Nolan, Program Coordinator for the non-profit Believe in Books Literacy Foundation. “Families can share a story onboard the moving train with the characters from the book, while the net proceeds help support literacy programs throughout New Hampshire—it’s a winning combination”.
Tickets for Seuss Adventure are now available online at www.HoboRR.com and are priced at just $20.00 per person (ages 3 and up). For additional information or to volunteer for this event, feel free to contact the Believe in Books Literacy Foundation at (603) 745-9980.
